Comment:
On the reverse side of this watercolour is the following inscription: "By Edv. Munch / From spring 1885 / Schous plass 1, view from the window depicted in "Spring" / (Information from Miss Inger Munch) / G." There is uncertainty about who "G" is, but it might be Munch’s friend Christian Gierløff. If this actually is the view from the window at Schous plass 1, then the dating of 1885 is correct, as the Munch family moved to this address that year. But it is difficult to reconcile the view of the street in the watercolour with what could be seen from this apartment, so it’s possible that his sister Inger’s memory had failed her. It has not been possible to confirm the exact location of this street in the neighbourhood of Grünerløkka, so the dating implies a slightly broader timespan than the inscription claims.
