Christian Munch Resting after Dinner

1883 (certain)
charcoal
Wove paper. 251 × 258 × 0,08 mm (h × b × t)
Comment:In this drawing of Edvard's father we can see an early example of the so-called rubbing technique. The unusual, fine mesh-like pattern is not due to the structure of the paper but to the material that was lying underneath it. Munch may have been resting the paper on the cover of a sketchbook – many of the sketchbooks in the Munch Museum have a similar structure. (MB)
