Comment:
Throughout the 1880s Munch had what you might call a secret "project": to depict the diversity of everyday life as he observed it around him. In Kristiania he portrayed the middle class and bohemians; workers and poor folk; young and old in a wide range of social situations. But he did this almost exclusively in drawings – not paintings. This aspect of Munch’s art is therefore relatively unknown to many. On an extended visit to Hamar and Hedmark County in spring and early summer 1882, he continued his rapidly sketched depictions of everyday life. In addition to this drawing, we can see examples of this in "Three Women on a Country Road" (T 88 recto) and "Woman at the Loom" (T 497 recto and verso).
