Hele Karl Johans gade glimrende oplyst, lys i alle vinduer, lysbuer opover hele gaden" (MM I 51).

Munch was never a documentary artist in the real sense. A few drawings of official or public events do exist, however. In 1882 , for example, he depicted the fireworks above the Palace celebrating the visit by the Crown Prince Couple. The drawing is dated 1880, but this is probably a mistaken date added later on. The Crown Prince Gustav (later King Gustav V) was wed to Victoria of Baden in Stockholm on 20th September 1881. The inscription (“Fireworks at the Crown Prince Couple’s Wedding”) refers to the wedding, but he had first written “Procession”, which is crossed out and replaced with “Wedding”. The wedding can of course have been celebrated with fireworks over the Palace in Kristiania on the wedding day in September 1881, but if it is a question of a “Procession”, then it must have been on 13th February 1882. We know that there were fireworks on that occasion, and also that Munch was present. He wrote in his diary on that day: ”The fireworks began at 8 o’clock. The Karl Johan was totally illuminated, light in all of the windows, arches of light the whole length of the street.” (MM I 51)
