Comment:
Although this drawing of a fiddler is made on a relatively small sheet of paper, Munch chose to use charcoal. Despite the coarse drawing tool the details are well articulated. He alternates between thin and thick lines and fills the shapes with quick and steady crosshatching. The face is described with very few elements, and yet he manages to give it a characteristic expression. This full-length portrait of an unknown fiddler is one of the highlights of Munch’s early, realistic figure drawings.
