Peeping Tom

Ca 1883 ( plausible)
Pen
Wove paper. 363 × 237 mm (h × b × t)
Comment:This pen drawing is an extremely direct and explicit portrayal – and perhaps the only time an erect penis appears in Munch’s art. We can assume that it was hardly intended for public viewing, yet today it is barely capable of shocking anyone. Despite the potentially offensive scene, the comical aspect is what catches our attention. This drawing was most likely executed before Munch became acquainted with Hans Jæger and the Kristiania Bohemia in 1884, where sex and sexuality was the subject around which almost everything revolved.
