Comment:
This late self-image can be viewed as an echo of Munch’s "The Scream", executed fifty years earlier. The angst radiates from both works, but while it is interpreted as an existential angst in "The Scream", with death as one of several elements, it is primarily a case of pure mortal fear in "Quarter Past Two in the Morning". The main character’s inner turmoil is underscored by the rapid, nervous brushstrokes and the ambiguously defined room.
