Comment:
Grev Botho von Schwerin (1866–1917) was a lawyer and later an electrochemist. During the 1890s he was associated with the literary journal PAN in Berlin, which had commissioned Munch to do illustrations for them. In 1894 Munch made a charcoal drawing of Schwerin, as well as this pastel, which was most likely a commissioned portrait. Whether the count was dissatisfied with the result, is not known, in any case the pastel remained in Munch’s possession
