Helma Meyer made her debut at Centraltheateret in 1905, and an unverified piece of information in the Munch Museum’s portrait archive states that the drawing was made after she had become an actress. She was married in 1910 with Mathias Georg Backer and moved to Ålesund, where Backer was Harbourmaster. Munch was mostly abroad from summer 1905 to spring 1909, and during the first period after his return he was not in Kristiania. 1905 was therefore chosen as the probable dating of this drawing.
