Comment:
Munch made paintings, drawings and etchings of horses, both his own and those belonging to others. Munch’s white horse had a good life – it did nothing but sleep, eat and serve as a model for his master. Trying to date the many horse drawings presents a challenge, but when they are included in a sketchbook, as here, the other drawings can often provide us with clues. This sketchbook consists primarily of motifs from Kragerø, made between 1910 and 1915, and though he had no horse of his own at Skrubben, there are several horse motifs from his stay in this town in Southern Norway – the most familiar of which is perhaps "Galloping Horse" from 1910-12.
