Sketchbook
1914 (
plausible)
Perm: blå kartong, svart lerretsrygg. 156 × 247 × 0,09 mm (h × b × t)
Comment:
This sketchbook contains a number of drawings of workers walking, some of them with clear references to the painting "Workers on their Way Home" (MM.M.00365), see for example page 8 and 40. The painting is dated 1913-14, yet on page 12 Munch writes, "the war has begun". WWI broke out in July 1914, so this sketchbook was probably not used in 1913.
The probable sculptural drafts of a man breaking out of his chains was previously dated 1909-10, but it is unlikely that Munch would have begun on page 18 in an empty sketchbook. It is more reasonable to interpret this motif as a commentary on the war, or on the centennial anniversary of the constitution and independence from Denmark. (MB)
