Munch’s portraits of his brother (Peter) Andreas almost always depict him reading a book. Since he didn’t begin studying medicine until 1885, he must have been an enthusiastic schoolboy – or at least an avid reader – in the preceding years as well. Andreas was immortalised in several paintings in 1882-1886.
