A Throng in a City Street

Ca 1883 ( plausible)
Pen
Wove paper. 237 × 296 × 0,22 mm (h × b × t)
Comment:This pen and ink drawing is arguably less successful as pure documentation, if clarity is what counts. We understand that something has occurred here, but we can’t tell exactly what it is. The depiction of a rearing horse in the background can be an indication that someone has been trampled underfoot. An effect that contributes to the confusion arises from the fact that the whole scene is densely hatched; the forms are concealed and the daylight subdued, while inside the tight circle of figures – where one would expect it to be darker – the absence of hatching creates a strange light, as though the crowd is warming itself by a fire. This unreal light is a powerful eye catcher that draws our attention like a magnet.
