Comment:This motif revisits an episode that took place in Åsgårdstrand in the summer of 1905, when Munch and the painter Ludvig Karsten got into a fight with each other. Munch made several references to the incident in his writings, but does not seem to have given it pictorial expression until around ten years later. The composition in this drawing is close to that of an etching dated to ca. 1916 (Woll 561). The print is mirrored compared to the drawing, which strongly indicates that the drawing is prior to the print. 1912 is suggested as the earliest possible year, as drawings immediately before and after in the sketchbook have probable datings to 1912-13.
