The following is a list of tips and guidelines for using and navigating the catalogue raisonne of Munchs drawings.

NB
The Munch Museum cannot guarantee that the catalogue comprises a complete record of Edvard Munch’s drawings. Drawings by Munch undiscovered by the Museum may still exist. Should the Museum be made aware of new drawings, these will be examined and may be included in the catalogue.
The Munch Museum cannot guarantee that all the drawings listed in the catalogue are authentic works by Edvard Munch. Determination of whether a drawing was made by Munch is based on scholarly expertise and critical analysis. Drawings may be excluded from the present catalogue after renewed examination. In cases where the Museum is aware that doubt exists as to whether a drawing was actually made by Munch, this is discussed in the accompanying individual comment in the catalogue.
The Munch Museum reserves itself against any possible typographical errors in the catalogue.
Browse in the Catalogue
There are several ways you can browse and navigate among the drawings in the catalogue raisonne.
Selected Works
As an introduction we have chosen ten themes with 36 works each. Here you can read about a chosen theme and leaf through a selection of works. You can also click your way past individual works via the motif and setting keywords, or the similar works buttons – “Same motif as” or “See also” – to see related works.

Motifs
We have compiled a list of the motifs and settings that appear in Munchs drawings. We have marked every drawing with a motif and setting in order to facilitate navigating between them and retrieving them with the help of search. As the titles are not always descriptive, by marking the works in this way we can include keywords about the content that would not otherwise be available.
In the motifs and settings tree menu you can browse through to drawings of dogs, self-portraits and drawings from Ekely. If you wish to find out whether Munch included dogs in any of the self-portraits he drew at Ekely, you can go to Advanced Search, where you can combine searches of several keywords simultaneously. When you are inside the archive looking at a drawing, you can click on the keywords to see other drawings with the same motifs or from the same setting.

Motif Cloud
As an alternative to browsing and clicking in the motifs and settings tree menu, we have set up motifs and settings in a tag cloud, where all the keywords can be clicked on, and their size indicates how often the term is used.

Portrayed
Individuals who have modelled for or had their portrait done by Munch are presented with a brief Munch-related biography. You can also click past the presentation of the individuals to all the works they appear in.
For individuals who are included in the Norwegian encyclopaedia Store norske leksikon (SNL) we have been able – thanks to SNLs open data policy – to present their biography directly on our website. Individuals included in the Norwegian artist encyclopaedia Norsk kunstnerleksikon (NKL) have been equipped with a link to their biographies, in order that you can read more about the portrayed person in question there. Due to authors rights we are not allowed to publish the biographies from NKL directly on our website.

In Shared My Collections you can find collections that other users have compiled and made public. You can also register as a user and create collections which you can share with others if you wish. To register go here: Registration
Search
Free Text Search
The single search field is used for free text searching among all the types of information in the catalogue.
You can search with single words as well as phrases. You do not need to enclose phrases in quotation marks. The search results are sorted so that hits that include the entire phrase come first, while hits for single words follow.
It is possible to perform a multiple character search by adding * (asterisk) at the end of a word: draw* will for example retrieve the words draw, draws, drawer, drawing, drawings, etc.
Advanced Search
There are two tabs in advanced search; Works and Portrayed. You can use the search fields to retrieve information included in the catalogue. For more specific searches you can combine search words in several fields simultaneously. For Works you can also add keywords from the lists of motifs and locations. If you wish to choose multiple keywords, hold down the Ctrl key while you click on the keywords.
If you know our object numbers and wish to search for them, you should enclose them in quotation marks in order to get a precise result: “MM.T.02393”

Search Result
Result Types
If you receive hits from both the works and the list of portrayed, the retrieved material will appear in their individual tabs marked Works and Portrayed respectively, with the number of hits in parentheses at the end. Click on the tab to see the results.
Search Result Display
You can view the search results in three different ways:
- Image View (a grid with picture, title, medium and date)
- List View (a list format with picture, title, model/portrait subject, date and medium)
- Each work with all its details and pictures
You can switch between the image and list views by choosing from the menu located directly below the button for Advanced Search. To view details of the work click on the picture or title.
Sorting
The search results are sorted automatically according to their relevance (the best hit based on the search word(s). In addition, you can choose to sort the results by date. The sorting menu is located to the right of the image view and list view display menu.
Filtering
If your search produces numerous hits you can use the filter to limit them. Depending on the search result, you can filter according to portrayed, classification, date, department, thesaurus and whether the hits include a photo or not.
Sketchbooks
A separate view display has been devoted to Munchs many sketchbooks, which you can leaf through, page by page, and navigate back and forth between the books as well as the individual pages. We have included only the pages that have drawings on them. Pictures
You can click on the picture to enlarge it, and you can save it by right clicking on it and choosing “Save picture as”
In some instances pictures are missing. This may be because we do not have a photo of the work yet, or because a photo cannot be published for copyright reasons.
Save Lists in Excel or PDF Format
You can save information about the works – either in Excel or PDF format – both from the search results and from postings on individual drawings. The information you see on the screen will be included in the documents you save.
Register as a User
If you register as a user in the catalogue raisonne you will have access to more functionality that can be useful, whether you have more than an average interest in Munch, are studying art history or are a researcher.
Log in
To log in you must first register. You can do this here: Registration
Shared My Collections
As a registered user you can create collections of the works you are interested in. You can keep the collections private (the default setting) or you can share them with all the other visitors to the catalogue raisonne. You can give your collection a description as well as a name. You can copy it, and of course delete it.

Notes
You can write notes related to the works that you collect in a separate notes field.
If you download information about the works (in Excel or PDF format), your notes will be included in the documents that you save.
